INCLEMENT WEATHER

Should school be closed for the day because of weather conditions, the announcement will be made on KCMO or KMBZ radio and Channel 9 and Channel 41 television stations. Please listen for Independence Catholic Schools. School closing information can also be obtained by calling Star-Touch provided by the Kansas City Star. Dial 889-7827 and enter 1318. If the system is operating properly, St. Ann’s School, Independence will be announced.

If school is in session when severe weather occurs, the students will remain in class until regular dismissal time unless parents come to the Office to request and sign their children out for early dismissal. Parents are asked not to go to the classroom. All students will be dismissed through the Office.

COLD WEATHER RECESS

The Following guidelines will be followed for recess when the weather is cold.

  1. The temperature (with or without wind chill must be at least 20°F. for outdoor recess. The length of time the students will stay outside will be at the discretion of the teacher on duty.

  2. The playground must be cleared of ice and snow.

  3. Parents may request students stay in from recess for 2 days due to recent illness. For more than 3 days a doctors note is required.

  4. If a student has an existing/current/chronic medical condition that prevents being outdoors during cold weather, a doctors note must be on file in the school office

  5. Students are expected to have hats, gloves, coats, and boots for winter weather.

ABSENTEE & TARDY POLICY

All absences or tardiness , even if excused or planned, are recorded as absences or tardiness on the official record. If a student attends school for at least four (4) instructional hours on a given day, the withdrawal is not counted as an absence. If the student attends school for at least two (2) but less than four (4) instructional hours, the withdrawal is counted as a half-day absence. It the student attends school for less than two (2) instructional hours, the withdrawal is counted as a full-day absence.


A student who arrives at school after 8:05 AM is tardy. Consistent or habitual tardiness is serious. Students who are tardy 3 or more times in a week will serve a detention the following week. If the tardiness continues the student and parents will conference with the Student Assistance Board. In some cases, where tardiness continues to a problem, it may be necessary for parent(s) or guardians(s) to explore other educational options in order to ensure that the child's educational needs are being met and limited interruption in the educational environment is maintained for teachers and other students.


A student who arrives at school after 8:05 AM is tardy. A student who arrives at school tardy three times consecutively will be assigned to Thursday detention. Detention runs from 3:00 -3:50.

Faculty Meetings

Faculty meetings and in-service days for teachers are held about once a month, usually on the first Friday of the month. On these days, students are dismissed at Noon. Check your school calendar.

Health Requirements

The state of Missouri mandates that school children be satisfactorily immunized on order to attend school.

Head Lice
St. Ann's has a "NO NIT" policy as directed by the Jackson County Health Department. The child cannot be readmitted to school until all nits are gone.


Accident Insurance

Accident insurance is available to all children enrolled in St. Ann's School preschool through 8th grade. The insurance is provided at no cost to parents. If a child is injured at school or a school function, forms are available in the School office.
