Homework

The program of studies at St. Ann’s School requires that study be done at home. The purpose of homework is two-fold: to reinforce the daily lessons; to build responsibility, independence, and strong study skills. Middle school students will receive a zero for failure to do homework. The amount of homework varies with grade level. Studying is also homework.

Parents are encouraged to provide a consistently quiet time and place for study. Parents should also provide positive motivation and not too much help. Children should do their homework. Please aid your child in building work habits.

SUGGESTED HOMEWORK TIME

Grades 6-8 --- 60 to 90 minutes
Grades 3-4-5 --- 45-60 minutes
Grades 1 and 2 --- 30- 40 minutes
Kindergarten --- 20-30 minutes in reading

A GUIDE FOR PARENTS

The bulletin of the Council for Basic Education has published a list of ways that parents can help their children get a good education. It includes these ideas:

  1. Read to your young child as often as possible.

  2. Talk regularly with your child’s teacher about what can be done at home.

  3. Insist that your child be at home at a reasonable hour and spend a set amount of time studying each night.

  4. Urge your child to write every day.

  5. Encourage your child to speak about things that are important to him/her.

  6. Create opportunities that are enriching.

  7. Take your child to visit the library frequently.

  8. Answer your child’s questions - this is how he/she learns.

  9. Listen to your child’s spoken and unspoken messages.
